Hazelnuts

Hazelnuts are the fruits of the five-meter-high hazel shrub that belongs to the birch family. The hazelnut is different than about the peanut or walnut a "real" nut in the botanical sense. Hazelnuts are native to Europe and Asia Minor and today grow throughout the northern hemisphere. The bell-shaped, thick, woody shell includes a single large seed, which constitutes the edible part of the nut. The hazelnut kernel, which is surrounded by an equally edible, brownish seed skin, has been consumed for thousands of years for its good taste and beneficial effects on the body.

Hazelnuts are crisp and aromatic, and of course they also go well with desserts or baking, as well as a snack in between, whether chopped or whole. Hazelnuts are great for nibbling or for the small appetite for the road. Hazelnuts are a good source of nutrients for many unsaturated fatty acids, minerals and fibre that provide energy, lots of magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, iron, calcium, phytochemicals and trace minerals like zinc and copper. In addition, hazelnuts have large amounts of vitamin E. It is also rich in B vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, B9.
